The world watched in disbelief.
In February 2022, tanks rolled south from Belarus toward Kyiv. Day by day, the massive Russian convoy crept closer to the Ukrainian capital. And then it seemed inevitable: Kyiv would fall.
But the next morning, everything changed. Ukrainians blew up the bridge connecting Irpin to Kyiv halting the Russian advance and saving the capital. In retaliation, Irpin was devastated by retreating Russian troops. Nearly 70% of the town was damaged or destroyed, including the STU, its largest employer and a cornerstone of civic education in Ukraine.
Today, while much of Irpin has been rebuilt, the main administrative building of the university remains a ruin. Rebuilding STU as Build Forward Ukraine’s first building project is both symbolic and strategic. It will not only restore a key educational institution serving 4,900 students in international law and public administration, but also symbolically rebuild the nation’s civic foundation.
The university reconstruction began with an international design competition, won by global architecture firm Stantec, in 2025.
